What you might be able to do in the future.

The time will come when teams of folks from here will be needed and welcomed to help clear debris, to help with long-term medical needs, to help with rebuilding, etc. However, that time may be weeks or even months down the road. We will closely monitor the situation and try to organize one or more teams to go from Circular once we feel it would be helpful and prudent to do so.

If there are individuals who do possess specialized skills in medicine, heavy equipment operation, or are trained disaster responders, it may be helpful for you to check the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance website to see if they are looking for your skill set in any of their early responses or to contact them and offer to be available as they begin to put together teams.

In the meantime, there is much that we can do here at home. Circular will take a long-term approach to plan our response to this disaster.  We will take advantage of Presbytery staff and members of churches who have traveled to Haiti to speak about their experiences.  We may take on the challenge of raising money for a water system from Water Missions International to assist in providing clean drinking water to a neighborhood in Port au Prince. We may begin to build a line item in your church budget to help scholarship mission team members for upcoming trips to Haiti.

Haiti - What you can do now!

Pray for the people of Haiti and for all those who are assisting them during this crisis.
   1.   Give money
Here are four groups that are effective, long-term partners with groups in Haiti.
  • Hearts with Haiti – a group that supports the work of the St. Josephs Home, the group our mission team was planning to visit in April. www.heartswithhaiti.org
  •      Become a fan on Facebook for regular updates.  (St. Joseph's Family)
  • Water Missions International – this Charleston-based group is sending water systems to Haiti – many of you are familiar with the work of this organization: www.watermissions.org
Make checks payable to Circular Church and write the organization to which you want the money to go in the FOR line OR make your donation directly to the organization.  THE WEBSITES LISTED ABOVE PROVIDE REGULAR UPDATES ON THE CURRENT STATUS OF RELIEF EFFORTS IN HAITI
Charleston County School of the Arts Students, Faculty, Parents and Friends - Sammy Derrick, a member of our church and a student at SOA, is conducting a fundraiser to support Wings of Hope/St. Joseph’s at SOA. Sammy contacted Renee, the coordinator for our mission trip in Haiti, who told him they desperately need a generator at Wings of Hope (a residential school for special needs children).   Sammy hopes to raise the $1,500 needed for the generator.

2.  Prepare disaster kit(s) and bring to churh.
For directions see these websites.  Candice Suggars is organizing our collection.

3. Join the petition to forgive Haiti’s debt
Go to this website and sign the petition online. Pass it along to your friends.
